Originally hoped that it was a chatty book about various blurbs about Ireland its history its culture people and traditions But it was dominated by the history of the fight not only between Catholics and Protestants but the Irish fight for independence from English oversight The protests the English response the people on both sides of the fight and where they may or may not have fled or jailedEventually the author does get into various other aspects myths and legends A small number of actors he has a fascination with Ford's The uite Man Some cuisine The Irish version of common names like the saints that has Aer Lingus has named each of its jets Some tips on searching for your Irish roots And some absolutely lovely photographs begin each chapterThe one negative thing was the use of Irish vernacular which the author does translate but does not give the reader any idea how to pronounce any of those words Much less pronouncing the Irish version of common names Admittedly the reader could go to the web for the pronunciation but should they have to?2020 068

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book before I read it but it gives a small version of the history of Ireland and how it became a free independent country and years under English rule It teaches about those that started the rebellion those who died and those that continue on today It reviews the great writers from Ireland such as Oscar Wilde Eugene O'Neil James Joyce George Bernard Shaw and William Butler Yeats There are also references to Irish products such as Irish Lace Irish Whisky Guinness lager Irish crystal Irish Linen and anything else that comes from the Emerald Isle There are fun facts about Irish superstitions and all things Irish
